Uppers and downers are usually prescribed to people with cases of mental ailments like schizophrenia and depression

In slang, they're called uppers and downers, but they're really known as stimulants and depressants. People who take these drugs usually suffer from a lack of activity or over-activity in the central nervous system. Uppers and downers are usually prescribed to people with cases of mental ailments like schizophrenia and depression, just to name a few. Other instances when these drugs are recommended for use are in the cases of narcolepsy, insomnia, or anxiety. But while these conditions do require an adequate amount to normalize the functions of one's nervous system, there are some instances when you can get too high or too low.

Because of the effects of these prescription drugs, people have learned to take the legal medicinal amount and turn it into a lucrative money-making business. The most commonly abused stimulants and depressants include cocaine, ketamine, opium, and morphine. These drugs were originally for health purposes, but the reputation of these drugs have been tarnished due to misuse and abuse. Now these uppers and downers are used and popularized as party drugs, and a fortune can be made from selling them.

The most common problem that you can encounter when taking uppers and downers is your dependence on the drug. Even with required medication, a person can still find himself or herself a victim of substance abuse. It's particularly more difficult when a person is suffering from a mental ailment, but this is enough of a reason for an intervention. Should you find that you have friend or a family member suffering from substance abuse with prescription or recreation drugs, then it is best for you to immediately admit him or her to a drug rehabilitation center to undergo substance abuse treatment.
